The castle in Zdar, beneath Zelena Hora lies on the site of a Cistercian Monastery that was founded in 1252. The castle houses an interactive museum giving the history of the monastery and a cafeteria. It makes an excellent starting point for beautiful walks around the surrounding lakes and to the top of the green hill and Santini’s UNESCO church.
Velké Dářko is the largest lake in the region and is used for many recreational pursuits. Sailors and surfers use it all year round, cyclists enjoy the various cycling routes along the lake, nature lovers follow the marked trail and nature reserve around the lake while others bask in the sunshine and enjoy a refreshing swim in its waters.
The Pilgrim Church of St John of Nepomuk at Zelena hora (Green Hill) was designed by Jan Blažej Santini Aichl, a renowned architect throughout Czechia. The church is one of the classic pieces of Baroque Gothic design in Europe. The pilgrimage site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 and is a must visit attraction.
At 836 mtrs, Devet Skal is the highest point in Zdarsky Vrchy and the second highest point in Vysocina. A protected natural formation, it sits in the middle of beautiful forests and on major cycling and rambling routes. Devet Skal is a popular destination for many tourists who come to explore and enjoy the natural beauty.
